Elon Musk has revealed his latest AI venture: a project he calls Macrohard, designed to replicate the operations of major software firms like Microsoft entirely through artificial intelligence.
In a post on X, Musk described Macrohard as a “purely AI software company” being developed by his AI startup, xAI. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!” Musk wrote. “In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI.”
While details remain limited, filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show xAI submitted a trademark application for “Macrohard” on August 1. The filing covers a wide range of AI-related goods and services, from software that generates human-like speech and text to AI tools for video game development.
Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, also weighed in on X, claiming that AI could theoretically reproduce all of Microsoft’s functions, from coding to management. The post further suggested xAI is hiring talent to advance the initiative.

Macrohard adds to Musk’s sprawling portfolio, which already includes Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company, X Corp, and xAI. The move underscores his growing emphasis on AI and robotics, themes he has repeatedly highlighted as central to Tesla’s future. During a 2024 earnings call, Musk argued that viewing Tesla only as an automaker reflects “the wrong framework,” instead calling it an “AI robotics company.”
Neither Microsoft nor xAI representatives provided additional comment on the initiative.
