Google Advances Its Open-Source Silicon Project Significantly

The contract semiconductor manufacturer with its headquarters in US, GlobalFoundries (GF), has joined Google’s two-year-old effort to show that foundries can profit from open-source silicon.

In order to create a thriving ecosystem around open-source hardware, Google plans to offer open-source projects by academics, start-ups, and semiconductor foundries as well as more affordable options for producing custom silicon.

Process Design Kit for the GF 180nm process MCU platform “GF180MCU” has been made available by Google and GF under the Apache 2.0 license. GF180MCU open source PDK is accessible on GitHub as an “experimental” alpha release.
