IonQ, a global leader in commercial quantum computing and networking, has announced a strategic partnership with Emergence Quantum, an Australian R&D firm specializing in quantum hardware. This collaboration supports IonQ’s broader expansion into the Asia-Pacific region and reinforces its commitment to driving global quantum innovation through localized expertise.

Founded by former Microsoft quantum leaders Prof. David Reilly and Thomas Ohki, Emergence Quantum brings deep knowledge in systems engineering, quantum control, and hardware integration. Prof. Reilly, who previously held academic positions at the University of Sydney, Harvard, and UNSW, now serves as CEO, while Ohki, former head of Raytheon/BBN’s quantum group, acts as CTO and CSO.

Together, the two companies aim to advance ion trap technology, focusing on next-gen electronics, materials research, and the development of application-specific integrated circuits for qubit control. Their work will also target reducing system complexity and enhancing performance, helping to accelerate the scalability of quantum systems.

“This collaboration furthers IonQ’s efforts to tap into one of the world’s most promising quantum talent pools while contributing meaningfully to Australia’s growing quantum industry,” said Dr. Dean Kassmann, SVP of Engineering and Technology at IonQ. “This initiative will give IonQ significant access to a world-class team of Ph.D. quantum scientists that brings forward decades of experience in cryogenic electronics and quantum engineering.”

This initiative complements IonQ’s ongoing efforts in Australia, including its work with the Australian National University, and signals a long-term commitment to advancing regional quantum research and capabilities.

“We see tremendous demand in Australia for quantum technology so we are delighted to partner with IonQ to advance quantum innovation in the country,” said Prof. Reilly. “Collaborating with IonQ allows us to accelerate the pace of Australia’s quantum development and growth while retaining critical expertise locally.”
