Kong Acquires OpenMeter to Power API and AI Monetization in the Agentic Era

Kong

Kong Inc., a leader in cloud API and AI technologies, has acquired OpenMeter, an open-source and SaaS platform specializing in usage-based metering and billing. The move positions Kong to integrate monetization directly into Kong Konnect, its unified API platform, enabling organizations to turn APIs, AI tokens, and data streams into scalable revenue models.

As AI adoption accelerates, machine-driven interactions are generating vast, variable volumes of API and data calls. Traditional billing methods are insufficient, making precise, real-time metering essential. The integration of OpenMeter into Konnect will allow enterprises to measure, enforce, and bill for usage with accuracy—supporting consumption-based pricing, faster product launches, and more flexible monetization strategies.

“As businesses scale and AI adoption grows, organizations need simple, turnkey solutions to meter and monetize digital consumption in real time,” said Augusto Marietti, CEO and Co-Founder of Kong Inc. “With OpenMeter joining Kong, we’re enabling customers to turn their APIs, data, and AI capabilities into new revenue streams. Thus making monetization native, scalable, and ready for the agentic AI era.”

OpenMeter’s engineering and design team, including co-founders Peter Marton and Andras Toth, will join Kong, with additional investments planned to expand capabilities. While OpenMeter Cloud will continue operating independently for current customers, full integration into Kong Konnect is slated for early 2026, with migration to the enhanced platform expected by mid-2026.

Kong confirmed OpenMeter will remain an open-source project, ensuring ongoing community development. Once integrated, Konnect will unify API infrastructure, security, and monetization—giving enterprises the ability to seamlessly manage APIs, LLMs, and event streams across global deployments.
