Liquibase Launches Liquibase Secure & Liquibase 5.0 for Critical DB Changes

Liquibase

Liquibase, a global leader in Database DevOps, announced the launch of Liquibase Secure, the enterprise-grade evolution of Liquibase Pro. Designed for mission-critical applications and data products, Liquibase Secure offers a unified platform structured around three core pillars: Developer Productivity, Secure Automation, and Change Insights.

Alongside this, the company introduced Liquibase 5.0, formalizing two distinct product distributions: Liquibase Community, a free solution for developers, and Liquibase Secure, engineered for enterprises requiring robust governance, security, and compliance controls.

“Liquibase 5.0 formalizes the two paths we’ve seen in our community for years. Liquibase Community is for developers who want freedom and flexibility to manage database change on their own terms. Liquibase Secure is for enterprises that need speed with enterprise controls for governance, security, and compliance, where every driver, extension, and policy is already tested and packaged. Both share the same foundation, but they represent very different experiences. One is DIY. The other is built for the modern enterprise that can’t afford to trade velocity for risk,” said Pete Pickerill, co-founder of Liquibase.

Two distributions, one community

With version 5.0, Liquibase now delivers two tailored experiences for database teams. Liquibase Community continues to be freely available and powers thousands of developer-led projects worldwide. Liquibase Secure builds upon this foundation with certified packaging, policy enforcement, drift detection, observability, and dedicated enterprise support for mission-critical environments. The distinction lies in how much operational responsibility an organization wants to assume from day one.

To safeguard the project’s long-term sustainability, Liquibase is adopting the Functional Source License (FSL) for Liquibase Community. This licensing model keeps the software free for developers while preventing third parties from monetizing it without contributing back. By implementing FSL, Liquibase protects ecosystem integrity and ensures that innovations driven by the community continue to benefit all users.

Following in the footsteps of peers such as Sentry and Codecov, Liquibase’s adoption of FSL preserves developer freedom while enhancing project sustainability.

Patti Soch, CEO of Liquibase, commented: “Liquibase was born in the open source community, and that heritage continues to guide our values. By adopting the Functional Source License, we are protecting the collaborative foundation of Liquibase while ensuring the project remains sustainable for the future. Developers and enterprises alike can trust Liquibase to stay free to use, community-driven, and built to last.”

A unified platform for enterprise database management

Liquibase Secure delivers an all-in-one, certified distribution that removes the friction of assembling drivers, extensions, and dependencies. The platform is built around three key pillars:

  • Developer Productivity: Empowers developers with autonomy and built-in guardrails for daily workflows.

  • Secure Automation: Integrates governance, security, and compliance into every database change automatically.

  • Change Insights: Provides audit-ready visibility so that every change is trusted, explainable, and observable.

With this launch, Liquibase reinforces its commitment to enabling enterprise database teams to accelerate delivery, maintain compliance, and safeguard mission-critical systems without compromising on developer freedom or agility.
