The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has unveiled a significant expansion of its research capabilities with the establishment of the Institute of Foundation Models (IFM) and the launch of a dedicated AI research lab in Silicon Valley. These initiatives mark a strategic effort to bolster global collaboration and innovation in the fast-evolving domain of artificial intelligence.

The newly created Institute of Foundation Models will be headquartered in Abu Dhabi and will focus on advancing the science and deployment of large-scale AI systems, particularly foundation models that underpin technologies like generative AI and multimodal learning. The IFM will also support open research, partner with industry, and train the next generation of AI researchers and engineers.

Simultaneously, MBZUAI is setting up a U.S.-based AI lab in Silicon Valley to engage with leading academic, commercial, and venture communities. The lab will serve as a research and innovation outpost, enabling collaboration with AI talent and startups in the heart of the global tech ecosystem.

“Foundation models are reshaping the frontiers of AI and unlocking unprecedented capabilities in language, vision, and decision-making,” said Professor Timothy Baldwin, Acting Provost and Executive Director of the IFM. “With the launch of the Institute and our new Silicon Valley lab, MBZUAI is positioned to lead foundational research while working hand-in-hand with the global AI community.”

MBZUAI’s expansion comes at a time of rapid growth and investment in generative AI and large language models. The university aims to be a key driver in building transparent, efficient, and scalable AI systems that benefit society.

The IFM will focus on five core pillars: fundamental research, applied research, open science, infrastructure development, and talent cultivation. MBZUAI also plans to attract global researchers and collaborators through fellowships, visiting scholar programs, and joint research initiatives.

By linking efforts between Abu Dhabi and Silicon Valley, MBZUAI is taking a major step toward creating a global network of excellence in AI research. The initiative underscores the UAE’s ambition to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence on the world stage.
