Microsoft Introduces Copilot Mode in Edge, Turning Browser into an AI Assistant

Microsoft

Microsoft has announced the launch of Copilot Mode, an experimental AI-driven experience in its Edge browser designed to transform the way users interact with the web. Available now for Windows and macOS users in select markets, Copilot Mode offers a more intuitive and efficient way to browse, combining AI-powered tools with traditional web navigation.

Copilot Mode replaces the standard new tab page with a streamlined interface centered around a single input field. Users can interact with the browser through natural language or voice commands to search, navigate, and perform tasks across multiple open tabs. The AI assistant, powered by Microsoft Copilot, can summarize content, compare data, and even suggest actions—all while maintaining context across tabs, provided the user opts in.

With a focus on user privacy, Copilot Mode allows individuals to control what data is accessed and how it’s used. Microsoft emphasizes that the AI only operates within the boundaries set by the user.

“Copilot Mode is a new experimental mode in Microsoft Edge, and our next step towards building a more powerful way to pilot the web,” the company said in its official statement.

Beyond conversation and navigation, future updates aim to introduce advanced features such as voice-triggered bookings and automated task execution based on browser activity. Copilot Mode also supports workspace customization and will continue evolving with feedback from early users.

While currently available for free, Microsoft noted that Copilot Mode may transition to a subscription-based model in the future.

With this release, Microsoft positions Edge as more than just a web browser—it’s evolving into a smart, contextual assistant capable of streamlining the digital experience and redefining how users engage with online content.
