Microsoft Introduces Fabric IQ, the Intelligence Platform

Microsoft announced the preview release of Microsoft Fabric IQ, a new semantic intelligence layer that enhances Microsoft Fabric, elevating it from a unified data platform to a unified intelligence platform.

Fabric IQ provides a governed, self-service knowledge graph that links business entities, relationships, and operational logic across all enterprise data. It unifies disparate data types – including analytical data, real-time streams, and semantic models – under a coherent semantic framework, grounded in how the organization actually works.

This new layer is built on Power BI’s semantic-modeling technology and enables customers to define business entities, hierarchies, metrics, and rules. Through these ontologies, customers can now create Operations Agents: AI agents that continuously monitor real-time data, identify patterns, and take action — all based on business context.

Fabric IQ supports consistent definitions of business concepts across tools (such as Power BI, notebooks, and agents), enabling faster onboarding, trust, and more reusable semantics. With its context-aware framework, the feature helps prevent semantic drift and improves data quality.

Microsoft views Fabric IQ as a foundational component for next-generation enterprise AI: agents can operate with real business meaning, enabling more reliable, business-grounded automation.
