NATO Taps Google Cloud for Secure, AI-Ready Sovereign Cloud Infrastructure

NATO

Google Cloud has signed a multi-million-dollar deal with the NATO Communication and Information Agency (NCIA). This agreement will provide advanced sovereign cloud capabilities. It’s a key step in NATO’s digital transformation strategy. The partnership will give NATO a secure, modern cloud foundation. This foundation will support classified workloads and boost AI use in mission-critical operations.

Under the contract, NATO’s Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) will deploy Google Distributed Cloud (GDC), including GDC air-gapped—Google’s most secure version of its sovereign cloud offering. Designed for fully isolated environments, GDC air-gapped brings Google’s AI, analytics, and cloud services into settings that require absolute control, ensuring data never leaves the premises while meeting stringent sovereignty and security requirements.

The deployment will enable NATO to strengthen operational autonomy, enhance data governance, and unlock insights from sensitive datasets without compromising control or confidentiality. The agreement shows Google Cloud’s increasing role as a tech partner. Global defense and public sector groups want secure infrastructure. They need solutions that fit complex rules and security demands.

“Google Cloud is dedicated to supporting NATO’s critical mission to develop a robust and resilient infrastructure and harness the latest technology innovations,” said Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA. “This partnership will enable NATO to decisively accelerate its digital modernization efforts while maintaining the highest levels of security and digital sovereignty.”

Antonio Calderon, Chief Technology Officer at NCIA, emphasized the strategic importance of industry collaboration: “NCIA is committed to leveraging next-generation technology, including AI, to enhance NATO’s operational capabilities and safeguard the Alliance’s digital environment… Through this collaboration, we will deliver a secure, resilient and scalable cloud environment for JATEC that meets the highest standards required to protect highly sensitive data.”

The deal positions NATO to advance its modernization agenda with a fortified, AI-ready cloud infrastructure purpose-built for the world’s most demanding security environments.
