AWS and SAP expand their collaboration to promote digital sovereignty across Europe

Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company, and SAP SE announced plans to make SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities available on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new independent cloud for Europe supported by an expected €7.8 billion investment from Amazon.

The alliance builds on the two companies’ longstanding partnership and SAP’s new comprehensive approach to digital sovereignty and AI innovation. SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities are SAP-branded cloud solutions with advanced security, aligned with industry standards for regulated industries and governments. The collaboration will focus on combining these capabilities and SAP’s deep business expertise with AWS’s infrastructure and operational expertise to meet the dynamic digital sovereignty needs of customers across Europe.

“We welcome the arrival of SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities on AWS European Sovereign Cloud because organizations will have more choice in meeting their sovereignty requirements while leveraging best-in-class technologies,” said David Brown, vice president of Compute and Machine Learning at AWS. “SAP and AWS share a common vision: to provide our customers with access to some of the most advanced sovereignty solutions available, allowing them to focus on innovation and achieving tangible results. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with SAP and watching organizations across Europe focus innovation on AWS European Sovereign Cloud.”

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud, with the first AWS Region opening in Brandenburg, Germany, by the end of 2025, is designed to offer greater choice to public sector organizations and highly regulated customers. This offering can help companies address specific digital sovereignty needs, such as data residency, operational autonomy, and resilience requirements. SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities are already available on AWS in Australia and New Zealand (from 2023), the United Kingdom (from 2024), Canada, and India (from 2025); the addition of SAP capabilities to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud represents an important milestone for customers across Europe.

With SAP Sovereign Cloud, organizations have greater confidence in innovation, compliance with local regulations, and the ability to scale to their needs. SAP Sovereign Cloud on AWS European Sovereign Cloud solutions will initially cover SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP, providing customers with a secure foundation for managing critical business processes and sensitive data and for compliance with applicable regulations.

“By expanding the SAP Sovereign Cloud offering, we’re enabling customers across all industries to harness the full power of cloud innovation and AI,” said Thomas Saueressig, head of Customer Services and Delivery and member of the Executive Board of SAP SE. “By deploying the SAP Sovereign Cloud portfolio on AWS European Sovereign Cloud, customers gain access to our full suite of sovereign cloud solutions, further enhanced by our long-standing collaboration with Amazon Web Services.”

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be distinct and independent from existing AWS Regions, with no critical dependencies on infrastructure outside the EU . Thanks to robust technical controls, sovereign guarantees , and legal protections, customers will benefit from the full capacity of AWS with the same levels of security and resilience and the broad range of industry-leading services that characterize existing regions.

Together, AWS and SAP have been driving innovation in the cloud for over 16 years, and this tradition forms the foundation of the new collaboration, which aims to support customers’ digital sovereignty requirements and accelerate their digital transformation in Europe.
