AWS IoT Device Management Adds Wi-Fi Simple Setup

AWS

AWS IoT Device Management has expanded its capabilities with the introduction of Wi-Fi Simple Setup (WSS) for managed integrations, making it easier for developers to deliver streamlined Wi-Fi provisioning within Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. The new WSS feature enables QR code–based device onboarding, allowing end users to connect Wi-Fi–enabled devices through a simple scan rather than complex manual configuration. As a result, device setup time is significantly reduced while reliance on technical support is minimized.

WSS is delivered through the managed integrations functionality of AWS IoT Device Management, which allows developers to centrally manage devices across multiple vendors and connectivity protocols. By incorporating WSS, solution providers can simplify the onboarding experience without compromising security. Users securely store their Wi-Fi credentials within managed integrations, enabling future device provisioning to occur with minimal user intervention.

When a new IoT device is powered on, end users simply scan the device’s QR code using the provider’s mobile application. The device then discovers and connects to a hidden network broadcast by the IoT hub, which securely transfers the stored Wi-Fi credentials to complete setup. This approach creates a near zero-touch onboarding experience, helping organizations deploy Wi-Fi-connected IoT devices faster, more securely, and at greater scale within managed integrations–based environments.
