NetApp, a smart data infrastructure company, announced a new generation of NetApp data management capabilities optimized for Red Hat OpenShift, providing enhanced resilience and scalability for on-premises and cloud virtualization environments. This upgrade further improves the speed and stability of backup, recovery, and routine maintenance, helping customers migrate, scale, and manage virtual machine (VM) and container environments more efficiently and predictably, thereby accelerating innovation and enhancing business agility with greater confidence.
According to Red Hat’s “State of Virtualization Report ,” 90% of surveyed organizations believe virtualization is becoming a significant driver of innovation. Furthermore, 71% of organizations stated that more than half of their IT infrastructure is already virtualized. As data volumes continue to surge in the AI era, enterprises are constantly expanding their virtualization environments to more efficiently support the management and operation of massive amounts of data. However, with the increasing scale of Red Hat OpenShift virtualization environments, traditional backup methods relying on scanning the entire virtual machine disk may lead to longer backup windows, unpredictable recovery times, and further increased operational risks. During the migration and expansion to Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, enterprises urgently need efficient and predictable backup and recovery solutions with block-level change tracking capabilities to meet established backup and recovery time targets while avoiding excessively high storage costs as the environment expands. At the same time, many IT organizations are also actively seeking simplified large-scale disaster recovery capabilities and more flexible deployment methods.
“When IT teams face slow scanning and backup processes, it’s often difficult to meet Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO),” said Dallas Olson, Chief Business Officer of NetApp. “NetApp and Red Hat’s latest innovations deliver stable and predictable backup and recovery performance, even as virtual machine environments continue to expand. With these capabilities, customers can now migrate, run, and protect large-scale virtual machine and containerized environments on the Red Hat OpenShift platform with greater efficiency, predictability, and operational confidence.”

The collaboration between NetApp and Red Hat further enhances consistency across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, enabling customers to run and migrate applications and data more flexibly between on-premises data centers and the public cloud. The two companies are working together to build a mature, enterprise-grade Kubernetes stack and continuously release new features to help customers build more resilient and scalable virtualization environments, including:
- NetApp Backup and Recovery for Red Hat OpenShift and OpenShift Virtualization : NetApp Backup and Recovery is a simple, secure, and cost-effective data protection service built for OpenShift applications deployed on NetApp ONTAP® storage . This solution accelerates backup and recovery processes by supporting incremental-forever backups with change block tracking (CBT), preserving storage efficiency, and offloading compute resources. These features avoid data rehydration during backup and reduce the computational resource consumption of backup operations. With this update, NetApp Backup and Recovery further enhances its protection capabilities for OpenShift virtual machine workloads, enabling fine-grained virtual machine-level protection and recovery workflows through full automation and further reducing recovery time through resource conversion capabilities.
- NetApp Disaster Recovery support for Red Hat OpenShift and OpenShift Virtualization : Customers can now apply NetApp Disaster Recovery to their Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization environments in public preview, extending capabilities beyond traditional backup to orchestrated disaster recovery for Kubernetes-based virtual machine environments. This Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) solution provides simple and low-cost disaster protection for virtualized workloads running on NetApp ONTAP storage, simplifying disaster recovery operations through an intuitive, bootstrap disaster failover and rollback process.
- Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and Red Hat OpenShift : Google Cloud NetApp Volumes and the Trident CSI driver for Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, based on Google Cloud, are now fully available and certified on the Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated platform in Google Cloud environments. This solution helps enterprises run virtual machine and container workloads simultaneously in the cloud, enabling simplified operations management and seamless scaling.
- NetApp Trident Parallelism : NetApp Trident now supports further scaling in Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP and Google Cloud NetApp Volumes environments by executing operations in parallel within the Trident controller . The Trident Parallelism feature allows Trident to process storage operations concurrently, rather than executing them sequentially, effectively eliminating storage bottlenecks.
Steve Gordon, Senior Director of Product Management for Hybrid Cloud Platforms at Red Hat, stated, “Traditional disaster recovery models are not designed for the scale and speed required by today’s virtualized environments. As enterprise virtualized environments continue to grow in scale and complexity, our partnership with NetApp is designed to help customers address their most critical challenges. Together, we are modernizing Red Hat OpenShift’s data protection and disaster recovery capabilities to deliver more predictable business outcomes and a stronger foundation for hybrid cloud strategies.”
