Anthropic announced the acquisition of Stainless, a developer tools company known for its SDK generation and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server tooling, in a move aimed at expanding the capabilities of AI agents and strengthening the infrastructure connecting AI systems with enterprise applications. The acquisition reflects Anthropic’s broader strategy to enhance how AI agents interact with external tools, APIs, and data sources as enterprises increasingly shift toward agentic AI workflows.
Founded in 2022, Stainless has built a reputation for simplifying the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs), enabling developers to integrate APIs efficiently across multiple programming languages including Python, Go, Java, Kotlin, and TypeScript. The company’s technology has reportedly been used by several leading AI and technology organizations, including OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, Meta, and Anthropic itself.
Anthropic stated that the acquisition is designed to support the evolution of AI from systems that primarily answer questions to intelligent agents capable of performing actions across enterprise environments. In its announcement, the company emphasized that “agents are only as capable as the systems they can reach,” highlighting the growing importance of infrastructure layers that connect AI models to real-world software ecosystems.
The transaction underscores a larger trend within the artificial intelligence sector, where competition is expanding beyond foundation models to include developer tooling, orchestration frameworks, APIs, and infrastructure that support scalable AI deployment. Industry analysts note that as enterprises adopt AI agents for operational workflows, demand for reliable integration tooling and SDK automation is increasing rapidly.

According to multiple reports, Stainless has become an important infrastructure provider within the AI ecosystem by helping organizations generate production-ready SDKs and MCP servers from API specifications. The company’s tooling enables AI applications and agents to interact more effectively with external platforms while reducing engineering overhead for developers.
While financial terms of the deal were not officially disclosed, several reports indicated that Anthropic had been in advanced discussions to acquire Stainless for more than $300 million.
Alex Rattray, founder of Stainless, commented on the acquisition in a public post, saying, “I’m thrilled to share that Stainless has been acquired by Anthropic! APIs are the dendrites of internet. The more & better connections you have, the smarter you are. The same is true for software. I like to think we’ve made a few myelin sheathes a little more robust & polished these last few years and I can’t wait to help developers everywhere build a bigger, smarter brain with Claude.”
The acquisition further positions Anthropic to strengthen Claude’s enterprise and developer ecosystem as the company continues investing in AI agents capable of integrating deeply with business systems, workflows, and external software tools.
