IonQ Completes Acquisition of SkyWater Technology to Accelerate Domestic Quantum Manufacturing Infrastructure

IonQ, a global leader in quantum computing platforms, has officially completed its acquisition of SkyWater Technology, the largest exclusively U.S.-owned and operated semiconductor foundry.

The strategic transaction establishes an integrated domestic framework for quantum hardware manufacturing. By pairing IonQ’s quantum architecture with SkyWater’s pure-play semiconductor fabrication facilities, the combined entity aims to scale next-generation quantum chip development, secure sovereign supply chains, and deliver commercial-grade quantum applications for defense, aerospace, and enterprise markets.

Unifying Quantum Innovation with Domestic Semiconductor Fabrication

The acquisition secures a reliable, high-volume manufacturing pipeline for IonQ’s trapped-ion and semiconductor-based quantum system roadmaps. In addition to powering IonQ’s internal product evolution, the combined infrastructure will continue operating as a commercial merchant supplier, delivering advanced packaging, wafer fabrication, and specialized quantum componentry to the broader technology ecosystem.

SkyWater will function as a direct subsidiary of IonQ, maintaining its commercial operations under the SkyWater brand to ensure uninterrupted service to its existing public and private sector foundry client base.

Operational Governance and Subsidiary Management

Following the close of the transaction, Thomas Sonderman will remain at the helm of SkyWater as its Chief Executive Officer, reporting directly to IonQ CEO Niccolo de Masi.

Under Sonderman’s continued leadership, the subsidiary will maintain its portfolio of Advanced Technology Services (ATS), Wafer Services, and Advanced Packaging Services. Additionally, the unit will expand its commercial offerings to include specialized atomic clocks, quantum interconnects, and quantum sensing hardware for external partners across the industry.
