Cloudflare Introduces Adaptive Intelligence to Counter Evolving Bot Attacks

Cloudflare has announced Adaptive Intelligence, a continuous detection engine integrated into Cloudflare Bot Management that uses insights from trillions of requests across its global network to identify and respond to evolving automated threats. The technology continuously learns from live traffic meta-signals and autonomously generates short-lived rules designed to make automated attacks more costly and difficult for threat actors to sustain. According to Cloudflare, advancements in technology and AI, along with affordable solutions available online, have reduced the threshold for cyberattacks. As a result, it has become possible for attackers to rent out botnets of hacked devices, hide their geographic locations using residential IPs, and impersonate humans using simple applications.

This poses problems for companies, which need to distinguish between legitimate and fake users while adapting fast to new attack techniques. Static solutions are based on updates that may take weeks and months to install, and, therefore, leave a window open for attacks that can evolve hourly or even minute-by-minute. That is where Adaptive Intelligence comes into play. “Building taller walls fails when the cost of scaling an attack is effectively zero. To stop modern bot threats, you have to flip the economics on the attackers. Traditional defenses offer a static target that threat actors can systematically solve. Cloudflare’s Adaptive Intelligence creates a moving target-rendering an attacker’s engineering efforts obsolete before their operation can ever achieve scale,” said Dane Knecht, CTO at Cloudflare.
