Keysight Technologies is partnering with Airbus on the UpNext SpaceRAN project. This initiative looks into the future of 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN). It will use cutting-edge, software-defined satellite technologies both on the ground and in space. The project tackles major technical challenges for 5G NTN adoption. These include smooth integration between terrestrial and satellite networks, reliable mobility management, and strong, high-performance connectivity across changing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite paths. Keysight is providing key test and measurement tools for the ground-based demo. This includes satellite channel emulation and user segment emulation. These tools validate key 5G NTN use cases. They include beam handover, gateway handover, and cross-network mobility. The initiative will culminate in the deployment of a regenerative payload with on-board signal processing and integrated gNodeB functionality aboard an Airbus LEO satellite, enabling flexible, efficient network operations in space.
