Anthropic announced a collaboration with Mozilla to enhance the security of the Firefox web browser using its advanced AI model, Claude Opus 4.6. The initiative demonstrates how AI can help security researchers identify software vulnerabilities more quickly and at greater scale within complex open-source systems.
Through the collaboration, Anthropic’s research team evaluated the Firefox codebase using Claude Opus 4.6 and discovered 22 previously unknown security vulnerabilities over a two-week testing period. Mozilla classified 14 of these issues as high-severity, representing a significant portion of the serious vulnerabilities addressed in the browser during the previous year.
Anthropic explained that identifying high-impact vulnerabilities in large software projects typically requires extensive manual effort from experienced security researchers. By applying advanced AI systems to the process, organizations can accelerate vulnerability discovery while helping defenders identify issues before they can be exploited by malicious actors.
The vulnerabilities identified by Claude were responsibly disclosed to Mozilla’s security team, which validated the findings and incorporated fixes into Firefox updates. The work demonstrated how AI systems can assist researchers by analyzing large codebases and uncovering subtle issues such as memory-management flaws and boundary-checking errors that can lead to security exploits.

Logan Graham, head of Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team, said:

Anthropic also noted that the collaboration illustrates the broader potential of AI-assisted security research. With advanced models capable of analyzing complex software systems, organizations may be able to identify and remediate vulnerabilities earlier in the development lifecycle.
During internal testing, Claude demonstrated the ability to rapidly detect issues within Firefox’s codebase, including identifying a use-after-free vulnerability in the JavaScript engine shortly after beginning its analysis. Human researchers then validated the results before submitting reports to Mozilla to ensure accuracy and responsible disclosure.
Anthropic stated that while AI can significantly improve the efficiency of vulnerability discovery, human expertise remains essential for validating findings, developing patches, and implementing secure engineering practices.
The company emphasized that collaborations with open-source communities are a key part of advancing AI safety and security research. By working with organizations such as Mozilla, Anthropic aims to demonstrate how AI systems can support defenders and strengthen the security of widely used digital infrastructure.
