IBM has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, LLC, a leading research and development organization jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors, to strengthen its long-term quantum computing strategy. Following the transaction, Boeing and General Motors will continue collaborating with IBM on quantum applications. HRL’s expertise in silicon-spin qubit engineering will complement IBM’s existing work in superconducting qubits, expanding the company’s capabilities in developing scalable quantum computing technologies. Beyond quantum computing, the acquisition is expected to accelerate innovation in quantum sensing, quantum networking, quantum materials, cryogenics, control electronics, qubit interconnects, and advanced packaging technologies. IBM believes HRL’s research will support the development of highly precise quantum sensors for applications in life sciences, navigation, defense, and scientific research while strengthening the quantum technologies.
