NetApp has announced its intent to acquire PEAK, a provider of metadata architecture and high-performance parallel file systems, to accelerate its AI infrastructure roadmap and support storage environments built around growing GPU clusters. The planned acquisition will combine PEAK’s metadata technologies with NetApp ONTAP software, enabling metadata services to scale independently from data and supporting AI workloads involving trillions of files, exabyte-scale environments and massively parallel operations. The move addresses limitations in traditional storage architectures as AI factories, AI clouds and data-intensive applications require greater scale, concurrency and performance. PEAK’s technology, developed through collaborations with organizations including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University, provides global namespace capabilities, scalable metadata and parallel NFS-based access.

“AI clouds need high-performance shared storage that can scale alongside growing GPU clusters while maintaining the resilience, security, and operational simplicity organizations depend on,” said George Kurian, Chief Executive Officer at NetApp. “With PEAK:AIO, we are delivering on our vision for a new generation of AI infrastructure that combines scalable metadata services with the proven foundation of ONTAP to help customers maximize infrastructure efficiency and support AI at hyperscale cloud.” The integration is expected to provide existing ONTAP customers with an evolution path while helping reduce data-related GPU stalls and improve infrastructure efficiency. Financial terms and closing conditions were not provided in the announcement.
